Punjab Board Science Paper Pattern: Objective, Short and Long Questions

The Punjab Board science paper pattern has three parts: objective MCQs, short questions and long questions. In the published model papers we checked, Matric Physics, Chemistry and Biology papers are of 60 marks and intermediate papers are of 85 marks. Here is how they are built, how the marks add up and what varies.

The big picture: three kinds of questions

The Punjab Board science paper pattern is easy to understand once you see that every theory paper is built from three parts: objective, short and long questions. What changes between classes is the number of marks and the amount of choice, not the idea.

  • Objective (MCQs): one mark each, four options, solved first in a separate short time.
  • Short questions: definitions, reasons, differences and small calculations. You choose some parts out of a larger group.
  • Long questions: detailed answers, derivations, diagrams and numericals. You attempt some of the given questions.

Below you will find what we could confirm from official model papers, and a clear note on what varies. We do not list chapter-wise numbers, because they change by year and board.

Matric (9th and 10th class): Physics, Chemistry and Biology

We read the Physics, Chemistry and Biology model papers published on the Model Papers page of BISE Gujranwala. They show the following structure for a Matric science theory paper of 60 marks. Independent pairing scheme pages for 9th class describe the same totals, so the two sources agree.

PartQuestionsMarks
Objective12 MCQs, 1 mark each, 15 minutes12
Short questionsThree questions of 8 parts each. Attempt any 5 parts of each, 2 marks per part30
Long questionsThree questions. Attempt any 2, 9 marks each18
TotalSubjective time: 1 hour 45 minutes60

Check the sum: 12 + 30 + 18 = 60. The long questions are usually written in two parts, for example a theory part and a numerical or application part, and you must attempt both parts of the questions you choose.

The same structure holds for 9th and 10th class in these models. The syllabus differs, so the pairing of chapters differs. For class-wise detail, open the 9th class science pairing scheme and the 10th class science pairing scheme.

Mathematics and Computer Science. These subjects have their own totals and their own question layout, and some boards add practical marks to the subject. We do not state numbers for them here. Open your board’s model paper for the exact scheme.

Intermediate (11th and 12th class): Physics, Chemistry and Biology

The intermediate model papers on the same BISE Gujranwala page show a theory paper of 85 marks for Physics, Chemistry and Biology. A published 2nd year Chemistry pattern for the BISE Lahore paper also reports 85 marks, with the same split. Two independent sources agree on these numbers, and they add up.

PartQuestionsMarks
Objective17 MCQs, 1 mark each, 20 minutes17
Short questionsTwo questions with 12 parts, attempt 8 of each (2 marks each), and one question with 9 parts, attempt 6 (2 marks each)16 + 16 + 12 = 44
Long questionsFive questions in two parts each. Attempt any 3, 8 marks each24
TotalSubjective time: 2 hours 40 minutes85

Check the sum: 17 + 44 + 24 = 85. The models we read were for first-year papers, and the Lahore description was for second year. Boards describe both years with the same total and style, but confirm for your subject and year.

For subject-wise scheme pages, see the 11th class science pairing scheme and the 12th class science pairing scheme.

What varies between boards, subjects and years

  • Subject. Physics, Chemistry and Biology above follow one style. Mathematics and Computer Science are laid out differently.
  • Year of the exam. Boards may revise the syllabus or the pattern. Use the latest notification.
  • Board. The overall structure is common, but small points such as presentation, order and choice may differ.
  • Practicals. Assessed separately and not part of the theory totals given above.

The safe habit is simple: download the latest model paper of your board and subject, and read its first page. The instructions at the top of the paper tell you the time, the marks and how many parts you must attempt.

How to use the pattern while you study

For the objective part

Twelve or seventeen MCQs may look small, but they are the fastest marks in the paper. Practise MCQs chapter by chapter and review each wrong option. Read definitions, units, names and simple facts in your textbook, because objective questions often come from the lines you skipped.

For the short questions

You do not need to answer every part, which is why short-question practice should focus on a clear, two-mark answer: one definition, one reason or two points. Learn to choose the parts you know best, and write them neatly.

For the long questions

Long questions reward structure. Write the heading, the main points or the derivation, a labelled diagram where needed and the final answer with units. If a long question has a numerical part, practise it separately with the method in numerical solving tips.

For the whole paper

Practise full papers in exam conditions. The method is in how to use past papers for science, and time planning for the hall is covered in science paper time management.

Which boards does this apply to?

The structure explained here is the general layout used for Punjab Board science papers. Official model papers are published by each board on its own website, such as BISE Lahore.

Students of all nine Punjab boards should check their own board’s model paper:

  • BISE Lahore
  • BISE Rawalpindi
  • BISE Gujranwala
  • BISE Faisalabad
  • BISE Multan
  • BISE Sargodha
  • BISE Sahiwal
  • BISE Dera Ghazi Khan
  • BISE Bahawalpur

Practising in the same style

Creative Taleem has chapter-wise quizzes, past papers and 2 lakh+ MCQs across the whole app, so you can practise objective questions every day and keep your short and long answers on paper. See the pricing page for open batches, and our guide to pairing scheme, guess paper and past papers for how to combine them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the paper pattern of Punjab Board science subjects?

A science theory paper has an objective part with MCQs, a short-question part where you choose a fixed number of parts out of a larger set, and a long-question part where you attempt some of the questions. In the model papers we checked for Physics, Chemistry and Biology, Matric papers are of 60 marks and intermediate papers are of 85 marks. Always confirm with your own board’s latest model paper.

How many marks is the objective part in Matric science?

In the Physics, Chemistry and Biology model papers published by BISE Gujranwala, the objective part is 12 marks with 12 MCQs of one mark each, to be solved in 15 minutes. Subjects such as Mathematics and Computer Science can have a different total, so check each subject’s model paper.

Is the pattern the same for all nine Punjab boards?

The general structure of objective, short and long questions is the same, but boards can differ in details such as choice, timing and paper presentation. That is why you should practise with your own board’s model paper and notifications.

Do practicals add to the theory marks?

Practicals are assessed separately at your school or college according to your board’s rules. The theory paper pattern in this guide covers only the written paper.

Where can I see the official model paper?

Boards publish model papers on their websites. For example, BISE Gujranwala has a Model Papers page at bisegrw.edu.pk, and BISE Lahore publishes notices and downloads at biselahore.com. Use the website of your own board.

Does the pattern ever change?

Yes, boards can revise the pattern or the syllabus. The details here come from published model papers and may be updated later. Treat your board’s latest notification as the final word.
