What the Chemistry paper asks of you
| Theory paper | 85 marks |
|---|---|
| Practical examination | 15 marks, held separately |
| Objective part | 17 MCQs, 17 marks |
| Written part | 68 marks |
| Short questions | Three questions of 2-mark parts: attempt 8 of 12, 8 of 12 and 6 of 9 (44 marks) |
| Long questions | Attempt any 3 of 5, 8 marks each (24 marks), every question in two parts |
Of the 85 theory marks, 17 are MCQs and 68 are written. The written part has three short-question sets of 2-mark parts: you answer 8 of 12 in the first, 8 of 12 in the second and 6 of 9 in the third, which gives 44 marks. The long questions add 24 marks: you attempt 3 of 5, each worth 8 marks and split into two parts. The practical marks are examined apart from the paper.

Turning the Chemistry scheme into a study order
With sixteen chapters and only five long questions, each long question has to cover ground from more than one chapter. Mark the long-question pairs on the scheme image and treat each pair as a single unit of revision.
The short questions give you a choice inside every set, so you can leave four parts in each of the first two sets and three in the last. Use that freedom on exam day, not during preparation: in preparation, cover every chapter.
Chapters near the end, such as Halogens, Atmosphere and Basic Separation Techniques, are shorter than the opening chapters but still feed MCQs and short parts. A quick, complete read of each is cheaper than leaving it blank.
Chemical Equilibrium, Reaction Kinetics and Chemical Energetics share ideas about energy and rate. Studying them in one run saves time and makes the numericals easier.
Preparing Chemistry across sixteen chapters
- Begin with the opening chapters on the periodic table, atomic structure and bonding, since the later chapters keep returning to them.
- Keep a balanced-equations notebook with conditions written beside each reaction, and rewrite a page from memory every weekend.
- For numericals in Stoichiometry and Equilibrium, write the given data, the formula and the unit on every line.
- Revise the inorganic chapters, Nitrogen and Sulfur and Halogens, as tables of properties and uses, then test yourself by covering one column.
- After every chapter, answer its MCQs, then answer a short set of 2-mark parts in writing.
- Use the lab safety chapter and your practical record to prepare for the 15 practical marks in parallel.
Chemistry slips that cost marks in the first year
- Writing an equation without balancing it, or without its conditions.
- Memorising reactions of one chapter and forgetting the reasoning that connects them.
- Leaving the last five chapters for the final week.
- Mixing up the roles of the two parts of a long question and answering only one.
Once the pattern is clear, move to the 11th class Chemistry guess paper, open the Chemistry textbook and plan your weeks with the FSc Part 1 study plan, pre-medical and pre-engineering.
Frequently asked questions
How are the 85 theory marks of 11th class Chemistry divided?
There are 17 MCQs, three sets of short questions worth 44 marks in all, and long questions worth 24 marks. The practical examination carries a further 15 marks.
What are the attempt rules for Chemistry short questions?
You answer 8 of 12 parts in the first set, 8 of 12 in the second and 6 of 9 in the third. Each part is worth 2 marks.
Will a Faisalabad student face a different Chemistry paper?
Faisalabad works from the same Punjab syllabus and textbook as the rest, and this page speaks to all nine boards together. Any extra notice from Faisalabad itself should be followed first.
Why does the page not list which chapters are paired in each question?
The new book has been renumbered and the chapter groupings found online still follow the older book, so they are left out. Read them from the scheme image of your board.
Do I attempt all five long questions in Chemistry?
No. You attempt any three of the five. Each carries 8 marks and has two parts.
Where can I learn the Chemistry chapters step by step?
The Creative Taleem app offers chapter-wise Chemistry lectures with quizzes and flashcards, so you can work through the book in order.
