How the Biology theory paper is built

The theory paper is 85 marks: 17 MCQs and 68 marks of written answers. The written part is made of three sets of short questions with 2-mark parts, adding up to 44 marks, and long questions of 8 marks each where you attempt any 3 of 5, which adds 24 marks. A separate practical examination carries 15 marks.

What to take from the Biology scheme

Biology marks depend on the form of your answer as much as on the content. Long questions are 8 marks each, so a labelled diagram and clear headings often decide whether an answer earns full credit.

The first half of the book works at the cell and molecule level, while the last four chapters work at the level of body systems. Study them in two blocks, because the style of questions in each block is different.

Because you attempt any three of five long questions, preparing only the chapters you like is tempting. The MCQs and short parts, though, come from every chapter, so leaving a chapter blank will cost marks elsewhere.

Plant Physiology and Bioenergetics need a careful read of processes. Draw the steps as a flow before you try to memorise them.

A plan for Biology from cells to body systems

1. Divide the book into two blocks: chapters 1 to 7 on living things, cells and molecules, and chapters 8 to 12 on plant and human physiology.
2. Turn every definition into a card with the term on the front and the textbook wording on the back.
3. Draw each diagram of a chapter three times: copying, checking, then from memory with all labels.
4. For processes like enzyme action or energy release, write a numbered flow of steps and test yourself by hiding the numbers.
5. Answer short parts in one or two lines. Keep every sentence on the point asked.
6. Practise one long answer per chapter with a heading, a diagram and a short conclusion.

Biology answers that lose marks

• Drawing a diagram and forgetting its labels or its title.
• Writing a long answer as a single block with no headings.
• Using everyday words where the textbook has a precise term.
• Treating the three human-system chapters as one topic.
